The problem is a lack of connection

Prof. Dr. Andreas Serra is an internist and nephrologist based at Hirslanden Hospital in Zurich. He sees patients with sick kidneys due to different underlying diseases. He cares deeply about the doctor-patient-relationship that he considers essential for therapy adherence – as holds true for high blood pressure.

“My kidney disease does not define me”

It was 1993, my first year at University, I was 19 years old. Life had just begun, and I was ready to start discovering what it was all about. I was often very thirsty – but didn’t think much of it. One day, I noticed my ankle was swollen. It wasn’t painful, just a mild sprain perhaps, but I decided to go to the hospital to get it checked.

Don’t neglect the kidneys

We usually focus on the heart and forget about the kidneys. Prof. Dr. Christoph Wanner, Head of Nephrology at Würzburg University Hospital and President of ERA, explains how important and easy it is to recognise the first signs of kidney damage. He also gives hope as new therapy options can stop the progression of the disease.
